Acknowledging the sickness in order to beat it.

A statement from Katie:

After the death of George Floyd and the massive awakening effect it had on white folks especially in the US, I was falling asleep feeling the devastation at the thought of my own privilege shielding me from so much deep hurt, that I'd never had to see or touch. Being an addict for fifteen years, I had a lot of hardship within that world; but I never had to fear being stopped and killed by a police officer. Even as an addict on the streets of NYC, I was never denied my humanity on the daily by others. The weight of how much I didn't have to think about everyday, in every store, every encounter, every subway ride sat on my heart... this poem just kind of happened while I lay in shock. I ran alot of deep white supremacy from the roots of our systems through me, and I think is captures a lot of extreme white privilege points of view, mixed with my own bullshit.

I think the point of art is compassion. That’s my point, anyway. Writing and performing the truth through the lens of compassion, no matter what it is, draws us to the things in us and others that we hate or are afraid of, so we don’t have to obey the hatred and fear any longer."
